Cottage Decoration Standards

Thank you for helping bring Boo Hollow to life! Each upcycled playhouse is more than just painted plastic — it’s a miniature storefront in a magical Halloween village. Whether you're decorating solo or with a team, this is your chance to let your creativity shine. Gather a group of friends, neighbors, coworkers, or your book club and turn it into a fun fall project — or post in your local Facebook group or Nextdoor to find fellow decorators who want to join in! Together, we’ll transform these cottages into clever, whimsical experiences that spark joy and wonder for every child who visits.

Choosing Your Cottage

Each cottage has its own personality, theme, and decorating budget — and every one is waiting for a magical makeover.

• Scroll through the gallery below to view your options. On your application, you’ll list your top 3 cottage choices in order of preference.

• You’re welcome to apply solo or as a group — families, friends, classrooms, clubs, or teams.

• Once a cottage is adopted, we’ll mark it as claimed.

Design & Decoration Guidelines

• Stick to your assigned theme. Each cottage comes with a designated store name and tagline (e.g., Bone Apetite, Hocus Focus). From there, it’s all you! Let your creativity shine as you bring the shop to life in a way that’s clever, cohesive, and fun for kids.

• Paint is required. All cottages must be painted or creatively covered. Use outdoor-safe paint that adheres to plastic and can withstand sun, wind, and light rain.

• Add a wow factor Props, textures, and playful touches make each cottage unforgettable — kids should feel like they’re walking into a tiny storybook scene. Here’s few ideas:

  • Add a bistro table with skeletons dining outside Bone Apetite

  • Set up an outdoor waiting room with spooky salon chairs for The Electric Curl

  • Line the “porch” with pumpkins, potion shelves, gravestones, or ghastly guests

  Note: For smaller cottages, please avoid or do minimal decorating in the interior — we need to leave room for our tween volunteers handing out candy!

• Keep it clean and family-friendly. A little spooky is fun, but no gore, blood, or anything too scary for young children.

• Make your shop sign using the assigned name and tagline. We’ll provide separate “Sponsored By” and “Decorated By” signs for each cottage.

*Cottage budget total is less that the sponsorship total because we factor in credit card processing fees and other administrative costs without the event taking a loss. This helps us cover expenses while still delivering a magical, fully-funded Boo Hollow experience.
